The Best Granita in Sicily: The Passion of Barista Domenic From Milazzo

Have you tried Sicilian granita? So you already know how it tastes. But now I’ll tell you where they make it best. I’ve tried granita in many Sicilian cities (except Catania, where I haven’t found it yet). But among the places where I’ve tried it, there’s one special place that my partner and I love to return to. In fact, every time we go to Sicily, we make time to go to Domenic’s for a granita. The advantage is that Domenic’s café is located in Milazzo, so you can combine it with a wonderful trip.

Milazzo is not just a port

Many tourists see Milazzo as the gateway to the Aeolian Islands. We’re also planning to visit them, but I won’t talk about them today. Today we’ll be off the beaten track to show you a little more of the authentic Sicily. Sicily is a safe island. The people here are nice. Most of them don’t speak English very well, but you can always communicate. That's one of the wonderful things about Sicily. The human warmth and always a pleasant vibe. Most local baristas will gladly prepare your granita or any other drink with a smile. But then there is one very special barista who has a great passion for his work.

Why Domenico's granita is the best in Sicily

It's such a small and, at first glance, completely ordinary cafe from the outside. But something inside is different than anywhere else. The difference is Domenico, the local barista. Every time we were here, he was there. He happily served us, and when he had a moment, he also explained how to order iced coffee and granita correctly, what granita fragola actually is, and what the differences are between them. I didn't know it at first. I arrived like an unloved tourist and watched him proudly show me and let me taste individual chilled delicacies I had never heard of before.
The advantage was that we spoke English, which made the situation much easier. But the willingness and joy in his eyes when he could talk about the goodies in his cafe were incredible.
From the outside, it is a completely ordinary cafe, and you can certainly find more luxurious ones somewhere in Sicily. But this one is incredibly authentic. This cafe owner treats his work like a real craft.
Moreover, and this always pleases me, I get everything to the fullest at Domenic's. He never gives me granita and just a little whipped cream, so to speak. He always gives me granita and a heap of whipped cream on top of it in the rest of the glass, so that I can relax and enjoy it. It is a very honest approach even to people who don't know, don't know.

Explanation of drink names:

Granita caffè con panna: this is an absolute delicacy. You get crushed iced coffee grounds, and the rest of the glass is filled with ice-cold, whipped cream. It's a calorie bomb, but it's definitely worth it in the heat. At 38 degrees, you won't feel like eating anyway, so it will be a good energy boost for your body.
Caffè freddo con panna: is a classic iced coffee. Some people add a little granita to it to keep the coffee cold longer. If you order "con panna", you get whipped cream. If you just say "Caffè Freddo" or "Crema di Caffè" when ordering, you get plain iced coffee. But that's also incredibly delicious.
Granita fragola con panna: this is the second absolute bomb. It's ground coffee made from fresh, frozen strawberries. It's not ice cream. It's strawberry ground coffee, and again, when you order, they put it in a glass and fill the rest of the glass with whipped ice cream. You can buy these iced refreshments in most cities (except Catania, where there is only Caffè freddo). So you can enjoy a pleasant refreshment even with children, who will give you a garanita fragola.

Logistics

If you are driving a car or a motorbike, you can park anywhere here without any problems. The Glorioso Bar 2.0 cafe is located at Piazza San Papino. Moreover, it is only an 8-minute walk from the main street, so you can take a wonderful walk around the city center, if you don't want to go to the Castello di Milazzo castle or the Piscina di Venere in the heat. On hot days, you will want to stay comfortable and calm. Therefore, you may also be interested in the fact that this bar is located only a 5-minute walk from the public beach, where you can relax and enjoy the fresh breeze and the endless sound of sea waves lapping over the pebbles. The beach is not crowded, and there is enough space for everyone. Moreover, this beach has a shallow entrance to the sea. You will definitely need water shoes here, especially if you have children. But the photos are definitely worth it.

What else can you do in Milazzo after having a delicious granita?

Castello di Milazzo

This is a very old castle complex that dominates Milazzo. It is also the largest fortified citadel in Sicily.
The place has been essential since ancient times due to its location. The ancient Arabs laid the foundation stone of this fortress. Later, the Staufs and Normans built breathtaking towers that gave the fortress dominance and impregnability. Around the 16th century, the Spanish surrounded the entire complex with additional walls.
From today's walls, as a tourist, you can enjoy wonderful views, and if you love photos, you will take really beautiful photos here.

Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo (Church of St. James the Elder)

This is a historical gem located on the lively seaside promenade of Marina Garibaldi. The church is relatively sober from the outside. No excessive frills. It has two entrances and is richly decorated inside with marble details. The paintings date from the 18th century. The most interesting thing is the ceiling fresco. It is huge and has the title Saint James led to the martyrdom. The church has two entrances and is often used for romantic weddings today. When we were there, there was none, but the church is beautiful and worth seeing.

Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine

Another historic church worth visiting. It was founded in 1574 on the site of two old chapels. It was almost destroyed during the siege by Spanish troops in 1718–1719. Later, in 1726–1752, the church was reconstructed. Some elements were saved. However, most fell for the homeland, and the church thus acquired a modern appearance for that time. However, inside the church, you will find beautiful works of art that breathe history.
The marble statue of the Madonna and Child is beautiful. It is by the altar and if you go inside the church, definitely go and see it. Statue from 1632.
A statue of St. Joachim from the 17th century. This is very rare. The statue is beautiful, and if you have time, you can see this beauty about a 4-minute walk from the previous church.

Also worth mentioning is the opportunity to walk along the beautifully landscaped promenade. But once you go into the side streets, you won't find much. The promenade is dotted with beautiful seaside houses in the typical local architecture, making it an ideal place for a romantic walk. Just be careful when walking and drink plenty of water. Romantic cities will put you in a great mood, but the Sicilian sun will test you.
